James River Band

 

Mr. Turpin Profile PixOriginally from Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania, Mr. Turpin is a graduate of Plum Senior High School.  He received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and has recently completed his Master’s degree from Messiah College in Instrumental Conducting.  Prior to James River High School, Mr. Turpin has taught at Elizabeth Forward High School in Pittsburgh and Great Mills High School in Maryland.

While at Edinboro University, he was Drum Major of the “Spirit of the Scots Marching Band” for two years as well as performed in groups such as Symphonic Band, Low Brass Ensemble, Brass Choir and Concert Choir.  He is a member of Phi Mu Alpha National Music Fraternity and the Order Of Omega National Honors Fraternity.  He also has been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel and perform in countries such as France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria and Luxemberg.

During his nearly four years at Elizabeth Forward High School, Mr. Turpin directed the competitive marching band, wind ensemble, jazz band, orchestra and percussion ensemble.  He also was a co-director of the high school musical as well as the pit orchestra director.  As the director, he also maintained three competitive indoor groups including Indoor Drumline, Indoor Color Guard and Indoor Twilers all of which have become Chapter Champions.  His marching band and indoor groups have all qualified for the Atlantic Coast Championships, which represents seven states and hundreds of groups.

Before starting at Elizabeth Forwardhe taught in southern Maryland at Great Mills High School for four years.  During the 4 years in Maryland, he was able to nearly double the size of my marching band and take theWind Ensemble to the State Festival after receiving all Superior ratings.  He also started the high schools first indoor drumline and indoorcolorguard program and began the schools first band and music department trip with performances by Marching Band in Disney World and Wind Ensemble in New York City.  His duties at Great Mills High School included the competitive marching band, wind ensemble, symphonic band, jazz band and percussion ensemble.

During his down time, Mr. Turpin remains busy in the music field.  He is a past president of the Tournament of Bands Western Pennsylvania chapter and is a performer in the Westmoreland Symphonic Winds where he plays tuba.  Mr. Turpin is also a certified judge for the National Judges Association where he judges during marching band season and the indoor competitive season for both Tournament of Bands and Tournament Indoor Association.
